Vexith Gaming - Battlements

Hi everyone! it's been a while since my last update, but here's another illustration for your enjoyment.

This was done for Vexith Gaming, I've been having a blast with the assignments for this project, and it was done completely with acrylics, with veeeery little tinkering in Photoshop, all thanks to my brand new Epson Perfection v500 Photo scanner, which has saved me a lot of headached since I learned to use it properly.

I'm very happy to be working with acrylics now and then, I still want to try more stuff, but so far I've been enjoying the process a lot.

The original acrylic piece is for sale

Vexith Gaming - Ferellik

Yet another race illustration for Vexith Gaming, I took a small break to from these to finish coloring a comic, although I still have to do two or three more to complete the project.

By the way, a couple of weeks ago I finally decided to create a facebook page for my artwork, that way I won't spam people with my work on facebook, since the blog is now connected to that page, so only people that are interested will receive the updates, I still have my tumblr connected to my personal profile since I post other stuff besides artwork there.

You can check out my facebook page here: Felipe Gaona Illustration

And my tumblr, since I think this is the first time that I've mentioned it here is: felipegaona.tumblr.com

Vexith Gaming - Elf

Here's another character illustration I did for Vexith Gaming, this one's your typical Elf, but I really liked the result, I know I say that a lot, but I wouldn't post it otherwise.

Thanks for visiting!

Vexith Gaming - Rolgarek

One of my favourite races that I've done so far, I had some struggles with the pose but it was nothing that a photo of myself couldn't fix, ahh, referece.

I added color to the background just to see how it would look, I think it works, although in the printed version the character will be over a white background.

Vexith Gaming - Dwarf

Another illustration for Vexith Gaming, I think I'm getting better at these.

Done in ArtRage as always, although I'm starting to miss acrylic painting, but I'll start working with them again soon.

Vexith Gaming - Kydoran

Another one of the series of races I'm creating for Vexith Gaming, this is a Kydoran, the idea is very similar to the kobolds of other RPGs, kind of like kenders in Dragonlance.

I've been plugging this for a while now but there are only 14 days left to the Monster Miniatures Kickstarter by Inkwell Ideas. So if you're interested head there and contribute to the project.

Dark Corridor

Another illustration for Vexith Gaming, this is another one of my experiments with acrylics, I think I'm getting the hang of it more and more, still, I had to fix a lot of things digitally for this illustration, yeah, I'm still learning.

Enchanted Glade - Part 4

This is the final version of the Enchanted Glade illustration

It does look a lot different from the color rough, I painted over some of the smaller details and the trees don't look exactly the same, I thought the overall "feel" of the scene was more important, something otherwordly, if that's a word

I hope you enjoyed this walkthrough my process, I'll make another similar post in the future with more steps in the painting stage, I couldn't take pictures of this one.

Thanks a lot to Steve Prescott for all the help!

Enchanted Glade - Part 3

Even though I liked the dragon sketch I did, it needed a few changes, the first thing I did was to use my very basic 3D knowledge to create a proper base for the statue.

I also decided to turn the statue the other way, I was surprised I didn't think of it before, this way the statue doesn't "escape" from the view. I also did the drawing again and it turned out much better. Well, the other one was just the sketch.

Finally I made a color rough just to show the basic values and color I'm going to use to my client, I heard an Art Director say that you should give an idea of what colors you're going to use to your AD, so I made this quick version, it was also a good reference for when I started painting the final.

The next part of the series is the last one, and I'll show the final version of the illustration.

Enchanted Glade - Part 2

As I mentioned in the previous post, I thought that the fountains were looking too similar, besides that, I like the direction the process was going, so I thought I could include some different fountain designs too add more variety.

I started with some abstract fountain designs, but I didn't really like the result, then I thought that a dragon / serpent could be a good idea.

I also gave the trees different shapes, some are more twisted and weird while others are just straight, this way the client had a lot to choose from.

The client picked up the dragon sketch, next time I'll show the final drawing with the corrections I made and the color rough for the painting.

Enchanted Glade - Part 1

I recently had to work on a full page illustration for a RPG, since I had enough time I decided to do the whole thing with acrylics.

I thought I could share my process in a series of posts, let's begin with the first step, thumbnails!

The idea was to create a fountain in the middle of a forest glade, it's a very vague description so I decided to add something to it.

I thought it would be interesting to add a naked figure as a statue in the fountain, that gives the viewer something to relate to and adds some narrative too, it could be the statue of a nymph or something similar that dwells in the forest.

After finishing these I thought that maybe they were all to similar, I decided to mix things up a little more in the sketch phase. I'll show those in the next post.

Reclamation RPG - Radiation

Yet another illustration for the Reclamation RPG.

This was interesting to do, I went through a ton of thumbnails and finally settled on this pretty simple composition, it got the message across better than any other complicated composition I could think of.

Reclamation RPG - Terrain Cover

Another illustration for the Reclamation RPG by Architect Games.

Hey I finished this one in a day, well I want to do an acrylic version, I kind of like the drawing, maybe I can use the black & white piece as a study.

Reclamation RPG - Cover Sketch

Preliminary drawing for another illustration.

I really like this one, so I was hoping to turn it into an acrylic, sadly I'm running out of time and I have to deliver every commission for this client next week, so I'll just do it in ArtRage as usual. Maybe I'll redo it as an acrylic later on.

It was done with a Pentel Brush Pen btw.

Reclamation RPG - Ambush

I'm back from my vacations (yeah I took a week off).

Here's a new piece for the Reclamation RPG, I'm slightly getting more used to messing with the PoV.

Transported - Governor

A new illustration I did for an upcoming RPG.

This is one of my attempts at acrylic painting, I've done a few before but this is maybe the first one that I really like, it didn't require much photoshoping besides messing with the contrast and removing some particles. All in all, a very good experience.

I followed Jesper's method too.

Another drawing for the same product I've been working on. I think I'll be able to show the painted versions soon.

Otherverse San Francisco

This illustration is a little old, I made it last year.

I'm not used to work on cityscapes, but I think this one came out fine, still there are some things I'd change but I'm happy with the result.

I'm trying to pay more attention to my blog, see?

¡A drawing for a future illustration!

I think I'll render this one with acrylics.
