L5R Gates of Chaos - Map of the Northern Territories

One of the latest illustrations I've done for Legend of the Five Rings, I think this card was spoiled last month, and as always I decided to make a couple of changes before showing it again.

L5R Gates of Chaos - Spawn of Vritra

I was checking the website of Legend of the Five Rings since I've been reading a lot about Gates of Chaos, one of the sets I participated in, when I saw that the Spawn of Vritra illustration I did for the set was spoiled, so here it is!

As always lately, since I made this last year, or maybe at the beginning of this one, I'm not sure, I made some changes to the illustration, nothing big, but things I just notice after a few months without looking at it.

And as always in these cases, here's the card preview.

Inkwell Ideas - Roper

A roper done for Inkwell Ideas.

This is my favorite of the set I did, I like how the tones and atmosphere turned out.

Inkwell Ideas - Dire Tiger

It's finally time to show some of the work I did for Inkwell Ideas at the beginning of the year, there are some illustrations I really liked among these, but of course I didn't have permission to show them until now.

This is a Dire Tiger, I was studying tigers a while back, so I really liked working on this illustration.

Vexith Gaming - Snake

A recent illustration done for Vexith Gaming, it's pretty simple actually, but I liked how it turned out.

Vexith Gaming - Battlements

Hi everyone! it's been a while since my last update, but here's another illustration for your enjoyment.

This was done for Vexith Gaming, I've been having a blast with the assignments for this project, and it was done completely with acrylics, with veeeery little tinkering in Photoshop, all thanks to my brand new Epson Perfection v500 Photo scanner, which has saved me a lot of headached since I learned to use it properly.

I'm very happy to be working with acrylics now and then, I still want to try more stuff, but so far I've been enjoying the process a lot.

The original acrylic piece is for sale

L5R - Chun

Another preview of my work for the L5R set Torn Asunder, I think the set was released on February 15 but I searched the card to make sure.

This was originally called "crane's mercenary" in the art order, but the name was changed as almost always, it was one of my favorites when I did the work for that set, but I made some tweaks to it as with the others.

Here's the card

L5R - Seppun Ryota

Another preview for the L5R expansion "Torn Asunder" I like some of the things I did in this one, but I couldn't resist making some tweaks to the illustration, you know, I would do some things differently now.

And the card as always.

L5R - Thunder Bow

Previews have started for the next set of Legend of the Five Rings, I already showed one of the illustrations I made for this set, the Lion Scouts, although I'll share it again in the future to show the card too.

I think I made this illustration around June last year, still, there isn't much to fix in it, I was rather happy with the result at the moment and I enjoyed working on an item, I never thought I would

Here's the card, I have no idea if it's good, I've only played the L5R role playing game.

Enchanted Glade - Part 4

This is the final version of the Enchanted Glade illustration

It does look a lot different from the color rough, I painted over some of the smaller details and the trees don't look exactly the same, I thought the overall "feel" of the scene was more important, something otherwordly, if that's a word

I hope you enjoyed this walkthrough my process, I'll make another similar post in the future with more steps in the painting stage, I couldn't take pictures of this one.

Thanks a lot to Steve Prescott for all the help!

Enchanted Glade - Part 3

Even though I liked the dragon sketch I did, it needed a few changes, the first thing I did was to use my very basic 3D knowledge to create a proper base for the statue.

I also decided to turn the statue the other way, I was surprised I didn't think of it before, this way the statue doesn't "escape" from the view. I also did the drawing again and it turned out much better. Well, the other one was just the sketch.

Finally I made a color rough just to show the basic values and color I'm going to use to my client, I heard an Art Director say that you should give an idea of what colors you're going to use to your AD, so I made this quick version, it was also a good reference for when I started painting the final.

The next part of the series is the last one, and I'll show the final version of the illustration.

Enchanted Glade - Part 2

As I mentioned in the previous post, I thought that the fountains were looking too similar, besides that, I like the direction the process was going, so I thought I could include some different fountain designs too add more variety.

I started with some abstract fountain designs, but I didn't really like the result, then I thought that a dragon / serpent could be a good idea.

I also gave the trees different shapes, some are more twisted and weird while others are just straight, this way the client had a lot to choose from.

The client picked up the dragon sketch, next time I'll show the final drawing with the corrections I made and the color rough for the painting.

Enchanted Glade - Part 1

I recently had to work on a full page illustration for a RPG, since I had enough time I decided to do the whole thing with acrylics.

I thought I could share my process in a series of posts, let's begin with the first step, thumbnails!

The idea was to create a fountain in the middle of a forest glade, it's a very vague description so I decided to add something to it.

I thought it would be interesting to add a naked figure as a statue in the fountain, that gives the viewer something to relate to and adds some narrative too, it could be the statue of a nymph or something similar that dwells in the forest.

After finishing these I thought that maybe they were all to similar, I decided to mix things up a little more in the sketch phase. I'll show those in the next post.

Broken Cipher Color Roughs

Most of the time when I start an illustration I try to roughly figure out what colors I should use, I generally do 3 or 4 of these roughs.

These are the ones I used for the Broken Cipher illustration, I still like first one a lot, I think if the blue was a little more subtle it could've worked perfectly to contrast the light of the spell the shugenja is casting, maybe I'll use that color scheme for another illustration, you never know.

L5R - Broken Cipher

My last illustration for this set of Legend of the Five Rings, I had a great time working on these and I'm currently doing work for a future set, I've always liked samurai so doing this is just awesome.

I think this is the best of the batch, I've been wanting to show it for a while.

Here's the card, the image is bigger than the others for some reason.

L5R - Incite the Phantoms

Looks like this is Legend of the Five Rings week in my blog, because I just made a quick search and another one of my cards for the 'Embers of War' set was previewed.

This was called 'Vorpal Bunny' in the art order, I got the instruction to look for the Monty Python gag, needless to say, it was fun.

Here's the final card format.

L5R - Ninja Guards

I found out today that one of the cards that I did for the Legend of the Five Rings set 'Embers of War' was previewed at eldojo.net (a Chilean website about L5R by the way).

I'm very excited about sharing my work for L5R again, it had been some time since the last cards I did for that game, at least a couple of years, and this was done around July 2011 I think, so I had to wait a bit longer, but it's finally here.

Here's the final card format.

Clockworker

It's been some time since my last work for Headless Hydra Games, I really enjoy working on these covers, it was quite a challenge to design a construct, and I think it ended up nicely.

I think I'll draw a girl soon, I don't have a lady on my gallery now.

Otherverse Boston

I've been working on a RPG book for some time now, and I had the opportunity to do some scene illustrations, which I really haven't tried all that much.

I`'m somewhat pleased with the result, I still have one piece left so I'll see how that goes.

I also have some work under NDA and I hope I'll be able to show it soon.
